Don Cameron: A Career Built on Excellence in Coaching and Leadership

Don Cameron’s contributions to tennis coaching in Australia and internationally have been significant, and his induction into the TCAV Hall of Fame is a recognition of his long and successful career. With a wealth of experience spanning decades, Don’s dedication to developing tennis talent, both in Australia and abroad, has made him a respected figure in the tennis community.
Pioneering Roles in Tennis Coaching
Don’s coaching journey began with an exceptional educational foundation. As a TCAV Advanced Coach (1973) and ATPCA Level 2 Coach, he gained the qualifications that would set the stage for his distinguished career. Don’s work as a coach spanned across a variety of roles, starting as Head Coach at Geelong Lawn Tennis Club from 1973 to 1987. During this time, he shaped the careers of many local players and built a strong foundation for the club’s future success.
In 1987, Don took on the role of Manager/Coach at the Geelong Indoor Tennis Centre, a position he held until 1997. His expertise and leadership were critical in developing the centre into a prominent venue for tennis in the region. Don’s influence extended beyond local coaching, as he became deeply involved in international tennis, particularly with the Korean Davis Cup Teams, where he served as coach for several years between 1979 and 1984. His work with the Korean National Junior Teams in 1985, 1989, and 1994 was another key milestone in his career.
International Coaching and Development
Don’s coaching experience wasn’t limited to Australia and Korea. His commitment to expanding tennis coaching globally saw him conduct coaching seminars and clinics in Japan (2003), Korea (2004, 2006), and Indonesia (2002–2006). These opportunities allowed him to share his expertise and develop relationships with tennis communities around the world, further solidifying his reputation as a coach of international stature.
Don’s coaching success also extended to managing teams at Geelong College, where he was the Head Coach for the Senior Boys Teams from 1992 to 2001 and the Senior Girls Teams from 2002 to 2004. His tenure at Kardinia International School in Geelong (1996–2003) also showcased his ability to develop young talent, both individually and as part of teams.
Legacy and Continued Influence
Throughout his career, Don has shown an unwavering commitment to the growth and development of tennis. From his early days as a Head Coach at Morongo Girls College (1974–1994) to his involvement with the John Newcombe Tennis Camps in the late 1970s, Don’s passion for coaching has made a significant impact on every organisation he’s been a part of. His role in coaching and developing players at all levels has left a lasting legacy on tennis in Australia and internationally.
