Ron Cummins: A TCAV Legend’s Impact on Tennis Coaching

Ron Cummins' journey in tennis began at a young age, starting his passion for the game when he was just six years old. Over time, Ron's love for the sport grew, and he transitioned from working in the motor trade to becoming a key figure in the tennis coaching community. His induction as a TCAV Legend is a recognition of his significant contributions to the development of tennis coaching both in Victoria and beyond.
From Motor Trade to Tennis Coaching
Ron’s career in tennis coaching began in 1968, when he saw an advertisement for the Tennis Promotion Council. After discussions with Ian Occleshaw and Don Tregonning, Ron decided to take a leap and pursue coaching professionally. Within a month of joining the PTAV, Ron was asked to take on the role of Treasurer, a position he held for an impressive nine years. His leadership and financial stewardship were crucial during these formative years for the PTAV.
Ron’s commitment to tennis coaching didn’t stop there—he went on to serve as President of the PTAV for eight years, playing an integral role in shaping the organisation’s direction and ensuring that it was aligned with the needs of tennis coaches across the region. During his time as President, Ron was instrumental in the development of the Code of Ethics, a critical document for the professional standards of tennis coaches in Australia. He was also actively involved in the formation of the National Body, laying the groundwork for a more unified tennis coaching community across Australia.
Coaching Success and Mentorship
Ron coached primarily in the South East Bayside suburbs of Melbourne, where he made a lasting impact on the community and mentored many young players. One of his standout pupils was Julie Hunt (Glen), who benefited from Ron’s expert coaching and went on to have a successful tennis career. His dedication to his students and his ability to develop their skills were key elements of his success as a coach.
In 1980, Ron made the decision to move to Queensland, where he continued to coach until 1995. His move to Queensland allowed him to expand his reach and influence, helping to elevate the standard of tennis coaching in the region. During his time in Queensland, Ron continued to inspire and mentor a new generation of tennis players and coaches, leaving a lasting mark on the state’s tennis community.
